Noshing All the Way

Just let the South End of Boston know you are coming.

"Start every day with a smile and get it over with," reads W.C. Fields quotation on the Flour Bakery + Cafe blackboard. Since opening the place nearly four years ago, Chang's never gotten over her cheerful smile. Neither have her fans, who come for the fine pastries, savory pockets and cakes. A man in denim peels away sections of The New York Times as the sun brightens the silver-gray walls. "I'll have a . . ." starts another man in a pinstriped suit, his eyes glazed by the selection: raspberry-filled "pop" tarts, thick blueberry muffin cakes, brioche au chocolat. I feel the pang of indecision in his pause. ". . . cinnamon cream brioche, he breathes.
